Poisonous Capsules Exposed by Media Attract Attention
These days, Weekly Quality Report of CCTV exposed 13 products adopting hollow capsules with chromium above standard from 9 pharmaceutical factories, which aroused a great disturbance in China.“Poisonous capsules”has become the focus of society.
According to the report, some officinal capsules manufacturing plants use industrial gelatin as raw material. While industrial gelatin is achieved from leftovers of leather. During the tanning, chromium in leather will be left in scrap material, which is called blue vitriol skin. The industrial gelatin made from blue vitriol skin usually contains chromium above the standard.
Chromium is a poisonous heavy metal, having valence states of three and six. Long-term intake of chromium in large amounts with valence state of three will result in diabetes, high blood pressure, tumor etc. The toxin of chromium with valence of six is even serious, which will bring harm to skin and digestive system, for example: dermatitis, pharyngitis, tracheitis, gastrointestinal disorders and some more serious results such us kidney failure or even cancer.
“Capsules poisoned by chromium”entered into pharmaceutical factories and were made into popular drugs: norfloxacin, amoxicillin etc. The harm is self evident.
Heavy Metal Measurement in Officinal Capsule is A Must
It was reported that Chinese Pharmacopoeia of 2010 version has an explicit regulation to gelatin hollow capsule : the material gelatin used to produce officinal gelatin has to reach the requirements of edible gelatin at least. Before leaving factory, related factory has to detect the content of chromium, lead, arsenic, manganese, cadmium etc.
According to Edible Gelatin standard of QB/T 4087-2010, edible gelatin should be made from the skin and bones of animals. Using industrial waste from tannery is forbidden. And Food Addictives-Gelatin of GB6783-94 also has explicit rule about the content of edible gelatin: edible gelatin has A, B, C types. Type A is the world-leading type, its requirement is 1mg/kg; Type B is average level and C qualified level, both B and C’s requirement is 2mg/kg.
Among these exposed 13 kinds hollow capsules with Chromium above standard, the one with highest chromium content(181.54mg/kg) is over 90 times of regulation in GB.
