The 57th ASMS Conference on Mass Spectrometry is held in Pennvlvania Convention Centre, USA from May 31 to Jun.4, 2009.
ASMS is a global conference on frontier academic studies of mass spectrometry and technology progress. This year the attending ones will up to more than 6000, among there are about 1000 Chinese experts and 191 companies participating in the exhibition. The opening ceremony is held in the afternoon of May 31, the first day of the conference. The training courses and lectures will also be given at the first day.
There are different topics, reports and workshops given by 7 branch halls during Jun.1 to Jun.4. The poster communication time is 4 hours every day; from 10:30 to 14:30. The poster writer should answer questions and communicate with the attending ones.
ASMS provides a long time for poster communication, besides this, it has evident characteristics in promoting communication. Owing the same size booth and the wide resting area between booths, the attending ones can talk to companies they are interested in without walking too far away. What is more interested is the attending ones can attend Hospitality Suites sponsored by 18 companies in Marriott Hotel. Every attendant can appreciate new products and technology developed by the participating companies. The exhibition halls are equipped with buffet dinner and wines, so you can see people chat and drink the beer or red wine under the lively communication atmosphere.
ASMS will issue some significant awards every year. The details are as the followings:
1.Award for a Distinguished Contribution in Mass Spectrometry
This award used in rewarding the distinguished contributors in mass spectrometry evaluates the focused and unique accomplishments in fundamental or application mass spectrometry fields, not those long-term achievements. The award-winners should have gotten remarkable achievements in fundamental theory and mass spectrometry practice. The award-winners are not limited to ASMS members. They can win USD10, 000 and models for encouragement in the annual ASMS conference, meanwhile the nomination will last for 3 years.
There are 2 sirs who have got the most distinguished contribution award in 2009 Mass Spectrometry: Mr. Simon J. Gaskell and Mr. Vicki H.Wysocki. They have issued a serial of article writings on Mobile Proton Model. The model summarizes variable collision-induced peptide crack phenomenon in real life, which have be widely used in peptides sequence testing and protein deduction. Established in basic thermo dynamic theory and numerous experiments, the model is well-known in understanding peptides crack spectrogram. This model provides definite predicts on crack and makes the spectrogram decomposable and simulated. At present, this mode is the base for the following aspects: improving perfectibility when searching algorithm in database; helping researchers in peptides mass spectrometry to establish more advanced crack model.
Mr. Gaskel is the chairman of Michael Barber Mass Spectrometry Centre in Manchester University, and the University headmaster in charge of researching.
Mr. Vicki Wysock is the professor of Chemical Dept., Biochemical Dept., and Molecular Biology Dept. in Arizona University, as well as the professor in BIO5 Cooperation Institution.
2.Biemann Medal
This medal is awarded for individual, who have got remarkable accomplishments in application fundament and mass spectrometry application fields in earlier academic life. The nominator should get Doctor degree in the nominated 15 years. This medal is set to remember professor Klaus Biemann, who has cultivated a lot of students and post doctors when he worked in technology institution in Massachusetts for 40 years. Students of Mr. Bieman cooperated with other friends set this Biemann medal. The award-winners are not limited to ASMS members, and the nominator will get USD5000 for encouragement. The nominators will be renewed every year.
The award-winner in 2009 year is professor Neil L. Keller whose main contribution lies in Top-Down proteomics. This technology is popular in ASMS members. Mr. Neil L. Keller started top-down study after graduation and develop this technology. Different from bottom-up proteomics studying protein scraps, Top-Down proteomics keep information on protein isoforms and on post-translation modification interaction through separation and complete protein in cracking gas chromatography. Professor Keller developed top-down analysis software ProSight PTM and provided electric charge top-down needed and isotope de-convolution function, which have been applied in more than 450 labs. Professor Keller analyzed a lot of significant biological system by top-down analysis technology, such as protein composition in human chromatin. And he also tested post-translation modification dynamics in histone in circulating cells. His laboratory is the main driving force for developing tandem mass spectrometry to analyze ion application of high quality. He has published over 130 pc articles and has got many awards.
Neil Kelleher is the professor of Urbana-Champaign Chemical Dept. in Illinois University.)
3.Research Awards
This award was set in 1986 by Robert Finniga to award young researchers in mass spectrometry study. The amount is USD25, 000. 2009 rewarding is provided by Thermo Scientific and Waters Corp. The winner supported by Thermo Scientific is Ouyang Zheng from Purdue University, and the winner supported by Waters Corp is Benjamin A. Carcia from Princeton.
Ouyang Zhen is the assistant professor of Electronic and Computer Engineering Dept, and Biomedical Engineering Dept. in Purdue University. Mr. Ouyang Zhen got the bachelor degree from Tsinghua University in 1993, and got the master degree from the same university in 1995. He got the master in physical chemistry in West Virginia University. Then he got the doctor degree in analytical chemistry from Purdue University in 2002. At present, his researches target in mass spectrometry miniaturization; preparing separation bimolecular on the basis of charge-mass ratio; ion orbit simulation and data processing.
4.Other awards issued in ASMS
In addition to the above ASMS awards, Ron Hites award is issued in the conference by Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry. This award grants the outstanding and original research report of high quality. The principle on evaluating this ward is the research direction concerning innovation, high technology, and the actual application effect, and the quality of article compiling. This award is named as Ron Hites to remember professor Ronald A. Hites in Indiana University. Ronald Hites professor found JASMS journal in 1988; the journal covers all research fields in mass spectrometry, such as chemistry, physics, geology, biology, and life science. Alison Ashcroft professor from Leeds University won JASMS Ron Hites Prize. The thesis article of Ashcroft is named as monitoring Copopulated Conformational States During Protein Folding Events Using Electrospray Ionization-Ion Mobility Spectrometry-Mass Spectrometry.
Chinese experts gather together in the mass spectrometry conference
During this ASMS, there are about 1000 Chinese experts participating in. In the evening of June.2, more than 200 Chinese experts gathered together in the CASMS in China Town of Philadelphia. The CASMS council also changed the session that day. The attending Chinese experts and representatives from each company expressed their congratulations. In addition to the congratulations from Agilen company, AB company, Thermo Scientific company, Waters Company, Bruker Donltoncs Company and Skyray Company, Chairman, Dr. Liu from Skyray Company send invitations to nu
